What is “Bush Music”?
The term "bush music" was coined by John Meredith OAM, Australia’s foremost collector of Australian folksongs, in the early 1950’s to provide a “handle” for the material he was recording from old shearers, bullockies, drovers, sailors and women who mostly were found living in the country, ie “the bush” as it is called here. He also recorded musicians who played for social country dances and coined the term “bush dance” to fit with “bush yarns” (the tall tales told about life on the land), “bush songs” (the songs about bushrangers, convicts, shearers etc) and “bush ballads” (the rollicking rhythmic poetry typified by Banjo Paterson).
Podcasts will be offered as regularly as life permits with the song and poetry sections based on a theme, such as Drovers, and music presented from a range of sources including field recordings and no longer available LP tracks, as well as recordings of current exponents.
